FAQs

Here, you'll find answers to common questions about the mental health services available to students, including information on counseling, psychiatric care, crisis support, and how to access resources. Please explore the FAQs for helpful guidance on our services, appointments, and how we can assist you in maintaining your well-being.

To become established with Counseling and Psychiatry, students may schedule their first appointment as an Initial Consultation. Students may schedule online via MyHealthSpace, call CAPS at 803-777-5223 or drop by in-person. Appointments can be scheduled as virtual telehealth sessions or in-person sessions

You will need to have ZOOM downloaded on your personal computer. Students will “log in” from their MyHealthSpace account. Go to APPOINTMENTS, then click JOIN, from here you may receive a popup box/message that says, waiting for the host, who is your provider” to join the session. Students MUST be in the state of South Carolina during virtual appointments.

The number of sessions will be determined by your Counselor and your needs.

Counseling services are FREE with paid student health fee and if the student is taking a minimum of six (6) credit hours within a semester. If you do not meet the minimum registration requirements, then a fee of $75 may be applied to your Bursar’s account.

Psychiatry If you have paid the student health fee, a Psychiatric intake appointment (one-hour initial visits) is $60, and a Psychiatric follow-up appointment (30 minutes) is $40. Intakes are required if the student has not been seen in over one (1) year. If you have not paid the student health fee, psychiatric intake and follow-up appointments are $200 and $100, respectively.

CAPS offers individual counseling, group counseling, couples counseling, community support, psychiatric medication management, and referrals.

We do not bill insurance for visits with CAPS. However, please note that you will be responsible for any out-of-pocket expenses that may accrue.

We can provide you with a visit validation that confirms the date and time of your appointment at the Counseling and Psychiatry Center. However, it is ultimately at the discretion of your professors whether they will accept this validation as an excuse for missing class, assignments, or tests.

Yes, you have the option to change providers if you feel that your current provider is not a good fit. A change of provider request will be submitted to the Director on your behalf, and you will receive a call to assist you in finding a provider that better suits your needs.

Individual therapy sessions are around 45 minutes. TAO coach sessions are about 30 minutes. Group sessions are about 90 mins.

If your mental health is impacting your ability to function successfully as a student and you are looking for support, please call us at 803-777-5223. We would be happy to discuss options with you, such as scheduling a brief initial consultation with one of our clinicians where we can further support with assessing your needs.

Yes. There are exceptions, including when there is a concern for someone's safety, including a student’s own health and well-being.

CAPS records will not become a part of your academic record; they are stored separately and securely maintained through our electronic health record (EHR) system.

CAPS does not provide the evaluation required to provide letters for emotional support animals. If you would like to learn more, please visit the web page for Accommodating Animals on Campus by the Student Disability Resource Center.

All our counselors are culturally aware, advocates of social justice. Our counseling team is also comprised of a diversity of identities. During your intake (first appointment), voice your needs if you want to work with a counselor of a specific gender or background. In most cases, we can accommodate these requests.

We ask that students trust that CAPS clinicians are making the best recommendation for you and your current concerns. Even if the option seems uncomfortable, we ask that you give it a try, knowing that discomfort often brings about change. If you choose not to follow through with the recommendation to engage at CAPS, we can provide outside referrals for you.
