Stephen Cutler, dean of the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy, has been named the university’s interim provost. He will begin the position July 2.
Under Cutler’s leadership, the College of Pharmacy played an integral role in the university’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The college was one of the first in the nation to develop and gain federal approval for saliva-based COVID-19 testing for students, faculty and staff. Its on-campus testing program — later extended to colleges and universities throughout the state — greatly increased UofSC’s testing capacity, complementing and supporting the successful testing-and-tracing efforts of UofSC’s Student Health Services.
“Dr. Cutler is an exceptional administrator whose innovative leadership helped the university deliver on our academic mission while keeping our community safe and healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic,” says President Bob Caslen. “In his time as dean, he has built on the university’s reputation for attracting top pharmacy students who want to make a difference in their communities. I am proud to appoint Dean Cutler as interim provost, and I look forward to continuing our work together to provide a world-class academic and research experience at the university.”
Cutler began as dean at South Carolina in 2016 after working for 10 years as a chair and professor of medicinal chemistry, pharmacology and pharmacognosy at the University of Mississippi. He has received more than $35 million in research funding from federal agencies over the course of his career, including grants from the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Department of Defense and NASA.

“I am honored to have been offered this opportunity,” Cutler says. “Provost Tate oversaw tremendous progress in his time at South Carolina. I look forward to continuing to promote excellence in research and learning at this great institution.”
The provost is the university’s chief academic officer. Cutler will take over for William F. Tate IV, who was selected as the new president of Louisiana State University.
