As the December Class of 2024 prepares to walk across the commencement stage, graduates leave the University of South Carolina with memories of enduring friendships, newfound passions, supportive mentors and life-changing experiences.
We asked students across the university to share some of what made their Carolina experience special. Here are just a few of their stories.
Meet Our Graduates
How USC changed my life: The University of South Carolina has transformed my outlook and personality in countless ways. When I first arrived, I was unsure of how to network or connect with people outside of my immediate circle. Through various experiences at USC — in classes, student organizations and work opportunities — I learned how to approach networking in a way that feels genuine, creating lasting connections with people who share my passions. My professors and peers have broadened my perspectives, challenging me to think critically and creatively. I've gained valuable skills in communication, design and research, all shaping me not just into a graduate but a person ready to enter the workforce. USC taught me that learning is a collaborative experience, and it’s the people around us who make it truly transformative.
Advice to incoming students: Embrace flexibility. I entered USC as a math major with no idea where I would be or what I wanted to do. It took one information science class to change everything for me. By taking one introductory class, I was able to discover a passion for information science and dive into the College of Information and Communications where I learned about visual communications. USC offers countless resources to help you discover what truly excites you. Flexibility doesn’t mean lacking direction; it means allowing yourself to grow with each experience, which can lead you to an amazing path.
What contributed to my success: The College of Information and Communications has been central to my growth and success at USC. My professors were not just educators but mentors who guided me toward my goals by offering research opportunities and career advice. Their mentorship inspired me to think more critically about the role of information in society and pushed me to pursue independent research projects.
A favorite memory: One of my favorite USC memories was attending the Honors Gala in 2022, held at the Columbia Museum of Art. My friends and I went in having no idea what to expect, but the night was incredible. It was a wonderful time filled with beautiful art, lively music and good friends who shared a similar passion for learning and growth. It was a chance to step outside the typical academic setting, bond with friends, and celebrate our hard work and achievements. That evening wasn’t just a social event; it was a reminder of the friendships and connections I made at USC, which will continue to be a treasured part of my college experience.
How USC changed my life: The University of South Carolina has profoundly transformed my life by providing me with unforgettable experiences. Through my involvement in various organizations, serving on executive boards, working on campus and studying abroad, I have gained a new perspective on life. As a first-generation college student, these opportunities have instilled in me a sense of belonging and the belief that I can achieve anything.
Advice for incoming students: I encourage incoming students to actively explore the infinite opportunities that the university has to offer. Attend college fairs, join organizations and, most importantly, prioritize networking. Engaging with the resources available at the university has enabled me to serve in various capacities on campus and place me in environments I never imagined I could be part of.
What I’ve learned about myself: The most important lesson I have learned about myself is the value of not overextending myself. It is perfectly acceptable to say no, especially when I recognize that I may not be able to present my best self. Prioritizing my well-being allows me to engage more fully in the commitments I choose to take on.
What played a role in my success: The Opportunity Scholars Program provided me with essential supplemental financial aid, opportunities for experiential learning beyond the classroom, and a supportive environment tailored for first-generation students like myself. This program not only facilitated my academic journey but also fostered a sense of belonging, enabling me to thrive in my college experience.
A favorite memory: One of my favorite memories was my first, First Night Carolina. Hearing "Sandstorm" for the first time and ending the night with fireworks and my close friends was a moment I have always waited for. It was on that night that I truly realized I had chosen the right place to call home for the next three years of my life.
What’s next: I plan to obtain more clinical hours and experiences to strengthen my application for physician assistant school.
How USC changed my life: The University of South Carolina has given me the opportunities to test the waters and be fearless in and outside of the classroom. Coming into college, I did not see myself becoming the student leader I have become, nor did I expect to have the many different opportunities and the freedom to explore what it means to be a true Gamecock. From storming the field twice, planning student events like Battle of the Bands and the Noel Miller comedy show with Carolina Productions, working at the Masters golf tournament, and many more, my time at Carolina was the best four years of my life.
Advice for incoming students: There is something for anybody at this university, so get curious, be fearless and make the most of your time. Also, wear your school spirit with pride. Don't let anyone tell you we're not the OG USC. We are the real deal!
What I’ve learned about myself: I discovered new opportunities and found my place in the larger Carolina community. Participating in various experiences and taking on leadership roles helped me grow and become a person I never imagined I would be in college.
Who played a role in my success: I could name many people, but if I had to choose a few, I would say Carolina Productions, Jessica Wright, Kim McMahon, Courtney Buzan, Lauren Emiliani and the HRSM leadership program led by Collin Crick. These people and Carolina Productions have helped me become a better student leader and, in general, a better human being. They have always been there for me, supporting me, pushing me to my limits, and helping me grow not only as a student leader but also as a person.
A favorite memory: This is hard; I have had so many great experiences throughout my four years. Besides meeting all the famous people in Carolina Productions or jumping in the fountain at T-Coop when we win a national championship, it would have to be when we stormed the field against Tennessee back in 2022, or the snow day back on Jan. 22, 2022.
How USC changed my life: Finishing my degree at 66, almost 50 years after I started, is one of the biggest highlights of my life. I promised myself I would finish, and now I'm seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. My time at USC has been awesome. Besides going to classes and hanging out on campus, I'm a huge Gamecock women's basketball fan and have been to many football games at Willie B as well. Though I'm a lot older than most of the students here (and all of my professors — and President Amiridis!), I have participated in some of the student activities and had some fun — fun that I missed at the other colleges I attended in my life. Besides the knowledge I gained, I have a new appreciation for my fellow students and their futures. I feel that USC has prepared us all for what's in front of us past graduation.
Advice for incoming students: Find time to participate in some of the social activities on campus. Go to a football game at Willie B (even if you don't know the rules — I didn't). Cheer on our Lady Gamecocks at Colonial Life. And explore Columbia a bit, too. It's a pretty cool place.
What I’ve learned about myself: You are never too old to learn. There have been certain subjects I've avoided my whole life, but when I came here, the professors were approachable and helpful. I learned a lot subject-wise, but I also learned a lot about what I can do and what I am capable of.
A favorite memory: Either the First Night activities or just sitting in class and talking with the other students as peers. I didn't feel like an outsider just because I was an older student. Maybe the blue streak in my hair helped; maybe it was my 1970s wardrobe, I don't know.
What’s next: I've already lived my life. I'm semi-retired and will probably fill my time by continuing to substitute teach and perhaps write that children's book I have been thinking of.
How USC changed my life: During my time here, I’ve met some of the best people who’ve become lifelong friends, and we’ve made memories I’ll carry with me forever. Being at USC opened my eyes to new perspectives and really helped me find my passion. It’s led me down a career path I never would have thought about, and I feel like I’m exactly where I’m meant to be because of it. I’m so grateful for everything this place has given me.
Advice for incoming students: There’s so much I would say. But the most important one would be to make the most of every opportunity. The University of South Carolina offers so many incredible experiences. If there’s a club that sparks your interest, join it — even if your friends or roommate aren’t interested. Go to events like Cockstock, Flick on the Field or the Farmer’s Market on Greene Street. Classes can be tough, but sometimes it’s worth setting aside an hour of studying to do something fun and memorable. You don’t want to look back and wish you’d been a part of those moments. Make the memories now.
What I’ve learned about myself: I’ve learned just how resilient I am. I’ve never considered myself an academic, and there were moments when I even questioned if college was right for me. But each setback became an opportunity for growth. Balancing academics, a social life and a job all at once wasn’t easy, but somehow I made it work. Looking back, I wouldn’t want to relive all those challenges at once, but I have no regrets. It’s been a key part of my journey, and I’ve realized I’m capable of more than I ever imagined.
A favorite memory: Obviously a popular one, but when our women’s basketball team won the national championship in 2022. There was no better feeling than watching the last few minutes of the game and then immediately running to campus. By the time we arrived, everyone was surrounding the fountain and was counting down the seconds before jumping in. It was later in the evening so we could really see the fireworks and chaos happening. It was truly one of those moments that just make you feel such pride for your school — you just can’t help but to feel lucky to be a part of it all.
What’s next: I’m aiming to start in social media for a brand I really love, with hopes of gradually moving into digital marketing in the entertainment industry. Combining these two career areas I’m passionate about is the dream, and I’m excited to see where it all leads.
How USC changed my life: I have met such amazing people while attending the University of South Carolina. I've had life-changing experiences like attending Cockstock, having the opportunity to model for Garnet and Black, and doing service work with Epsilon Sigma Alpha.
Advice for incoming students: Go to class and any on-campus events. Don't be lazy and get off course; your first year will be the building blocks to put you on a path to success. Even when a class says attendance isn't mandatory, go to class and begin good habits.
What I’ve learned about myself: I learned that I can handle a larger workload than I thought and be around larger crowds. I no longer let my anxiety control me.
Who played a role in my success: My advisor, Brittany Sparks, always gave me crucial guidance, the most helpful advice and helped me to graduate earlier than expected.
A favorite memory: It was my freshman year of college and I lived at 650 Lincoln. My group of friends decided to do a Steve Harvey night. I dressed up in my business professional outfit, drew on a mustache, and had 16 of my closest friends be the contestants. We played a few rounds and then we looked out the window and it was snowing. We all rushed outside and played in the snow for two hours, going all around the exterior of 650. It is a memory I'll never forget.
What’s next: I am applying for art teacher jobs in the Charleston area.
How USC changed my life: Coming to USC, I automatically expected the picture-perfect college life just based off what I saw on social media. I soon realized that this experience is personal and it’s about effort. If you put in little effort, little will come out in return. USC has taught me that my experience is in my hands, and this has reshaped my approach in life.
Advice for incoming students: Embrace every opportunity and step outside of your comfort zone. You are here for a reason, and you must discover new things that will excite you. Every experience can open doors, and you won’t know what’s possible unless you take those first steps.
What helped me succeed: The TRIO Opportunity Scholars Program played a huge role. Coming here as a first-generation student and the oldest child in my family, I didn’t have many people I could turn to for guidance. This made my transition feel intimidating most days. TRIO offered me resources, mentorship and a community that truly understood me. Their support gave me the confidence to navigate college life.
A favorite memory: My absolute favorite memory was Nov. 19, 2022, at William-Brice Stadium when the Gamecocks defeated Tennessee and we stormed the field afterward.
What’s next: After graduation I plan to begin my career as a registered nurse and hopefully attend grad school after some years of clinical experience.
How USC changed my life: The University of South Carolina has truly transformed my life. Coming here as someone from a small town, I initially felt overwhelmed. But USC has pushed me out of my comfort zone, helping me develop confidence, adaptability and a more open outlook on the world. USC has given me the skills and support to pursue my passions and prepared me for a meaningful future.
Advice for incoming students: Be open and proactive in connecting with others. Don’t be afraid to start conversations even if you feel overwhelmed, chances are others feel the same way. Taking those first steps can lead to great friendships and a strong support system that will make all the difference.
What I’ve learned about myself: The most important thing I've learned about myself during college is my resilience. As a first-generation Latina student, completing my degree in just 3.5 years has shown me that I have the strength, determination and dedication to overcome challenges and reach my goals. This journey has deepened my confidence in my abilities and pride in my heritage.
What played a role in my success: I'm incredibly grateful for the support of the TRIO Opportunity Scholars Program. As a Gamecock Guarantee scholar, TRIO provided the foundation I needed to succeed in earning my degree. I also found a home away from home by joining Kappa Delta Chi Sorority, Inc., where I connected with my closest hermanas, building a strong support system. Additionally, working with a research lab and the CHAMPS Clinic was invaluable in shaping my professional path and guiding me toward my future career.
A favorite memory: One of my favorite memories at USC was experiencing my first Lunes Latino on campus. That day, I knew USC was truly my home. I can’t imagine any other school where I’d get to sing along to Christian Nodal with friends right in the middle of Greene Street! It was a moment of joy, connection and culture that made me feel like I belonged, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
What’s next: After graduation, I plan to dive into the nonprofit world to give back to my community. Later, I'll be enrolling in a nursing program, allowing me to build meaningful, one-on-one connections with those I serve.
